9 ways to Survive the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

  1. Get some movement in! Take the family on a hike – or go it alone and get to that boot camp class before you arrive to dinner.
  2. Keep hydrated throughout the day. Sometimes we mistake hunger for thirst – it is important to drink water as the day goes on to ensure that our bodies are completely hydrated.
  3. Eat a healthy snack before you go – you will be less tempted to eat the calorie laden appetizers.
  4. If it is a pot luck, bring something that is healthy and that you know you can eat whether it is a veggie tray or a fruit tray – you can have faith that you know what is in it!
  5. If you are drinking alcohol, be sure to have one glass of water for every alcoholic bevvie.
  6. Pick one – alcohol or dessert – both are loaded with sugars that the body has a difficult time processing & digesting. Better to know beforehand and stick to your plan.
  7. Chew your food at least 13 times – so often we get so excited about this “special food” that only comes a few times a year that we forget to chew.
  8. Enjoy the company that you are with. Try to have meaningful conversations away from the dessert table to avoid the temptation of overindulging.
  9. Be gentle with yourself. It is okay to have a few treats at your gatherings. Just know that you will get back to your routine come Tuesday morning. This means back to the gym and your regular eating regime.
